Green Bees was initiated by Tamsyn - a Community Staff Nurse in Powys Teaching Health Board who loves her job but struggles with the environmental damage caused by driving and waste.
NHS Green Bees started through the Bevan Exemplar programme in an attempt to try to reduce these impacts. It was partly inspired by stunning photos taken of bees and other insects on an area of late mown grass outside Llandrindod Wells Hospital. These provided hope.
Tamsyn worked with six teams in mid Powys, suggesting each team member chose one sustainable action from a selection presented on a “honeycomb” poster. There was varied engagement, with some barriers to engagement. Despite this, Green Bees still made improvements.
An NHS Green Bees staff group has now been started which is working closely with the Sustainability Team on projects such as alternatives to plastic sandwich containers. Tamsyn has also engaged executive support and organised Carbon Literacy Training.
